Diodes launched dual-digital interface and multi-channel LED driver for RGB and monochrome solid-state lighting LED

2023-02-20

Diodes (Nasdaq: DIOD) announced the launch of its latest linear current LED driver DIODES AL5887. This product provides a simple way to drive many LEDs to achieve complex color mixing and different lighting modes. It integrates I2C and SPI interface options, providing maximum system design flexibility. The device has a wide range of color adjustment and brightness dynamic range, and can be used in smart appliances, electric vehicle charging stations, infotainment system displays, Internet of Things information indicators and computing hardware.

AL5887 has 36 independent programmable channels, which can drive up to 12 groups of RGB LED modules or 36 monochrome LEDs. It has an internal 12-bit pulse width modulator for color adjustment and a 6-bit analog brightness controller, which can be accessed through SPI or I2C interface.

AL5887 has three programmable groups for software control of each color, making it easier to program and set RGB lighting module patterns. Each channel has independent color mixing and brightness registers, which can achieve better color mixing scheme. The dimming function depends on a PWM duty cycle of 3% to 100%. Once the duty cycle is lower than 3%, the internal circuit will convert the output to analog dimming to maintain linearity. By combining PWM and analog dimming function, dimming ratio greater than 100K: 1 can be achieved.

AL5887 combines advanced diagnosis with fault reporting. Its comprehensive built-in protection functions ensure reliable operation and continuous safety, including short circuit and LED open circuit protection and overheat shutdown. The advance overheat shutdown warning also helps to protect the system earlier. The device uses two external hardware address pins, and can connect up to four of these devices together in I2C mode. Built-in 16MHz oscillator can avoid adding external high-precision clock, thus reducing the total bill of materials (BOM) cost.

Diodes' AL5887 LED driver uses a 52-pin wettable QFN package with exposed pads to provide better heat dissipation.
